7. Cotonou Civil Prison, Benin
Cotonou Civil Prison is a terrifying place to prisoners, where deaths have been reported to suffocation due to lack of space. This prison which has a capacity to hold only 400 lies in a small country in Africa, near Nigeria where more than 2000 prisoners are stuffed in a cramped situation. Many prisoners in this jail sleep in shifts and many are left to die due to the country’s poor judiciary system.
6. La Sabaneta, Venezuela
La Sabaneta prison is an overcrowded prison known for its notorious treatments of inmates, and high amounts of cruelty. Disease outbreaks in this prison are very common, due to poor hygiene and overcrowding. La Sabaneta was designed only to accommodate 700 prisoners, but it now houses more than 3000 prisoners. The corrupt system has caused the prisoners to be treated as menagerie in this prison, who face beatings, tortures, and abuses on a daily basis. There has been an instance of cholera outbreak which wiped out 700 inmates in this very prison.
5. Gldani Prison, Georgia
Gldani Prison in Georgia is known for its horrific sex video scandals where inmates are exposed to rapes by the guards using broom handles and police batons. The Russian Government was forced to look into the matter after the video went viral online and there were huge protests in the neighborhood. The video shows high brutality of systematic tortures, beating, rapes and sodomizing prisoners. The video also shows an American fettered with iron rods, mocked, humiliated and possibly raped.
4. Diyarbakır Prison, Turkey
Diyarbakir Prison in Turkey is one of the most barbaric and sadistic jails in the world. There are high rates of horrific acts of constant tortures, and other physical abuse of the inmates in the jail. The jail is known for its highest number of human rights violations in the world. Even children are incarcerated for life in this prison. There have been incidents of people setting themselves on fire, hunger strikes for weeks and even few inmates have committed suicides to escape such brutal tortures.
3. Camp 22, North Korea
Camp 22, also known as Hoeryong concentration camp is in one of the world’s most inaccessible places surrounded by high mountains and valleys. The prison is located near the borders of China and Russia, where escaping is impossible and prisoners are held captive for lifelong along with their family members. North Korea is known for its three generation imprisonments laws. This prison records nearly 1000 to 2000 deaths each year, and another 1000 to 2000 new inmates are brought in every year making this prison population constant. There are reports of extreme brutality, tortures, and executions and are exposed to mistreatment. Nearly, 30% of the inmates who come to this camp have some deformities like torn face, smashed eyes, scars on their faces, broken ears and other torture marks. The prisoners and the family members are born, live and die in this prison for three generation. There are reports of undaunted human experiments in this prison, where people are made to eat poisoned leaves and vegetables. The prison is a hell on the planet with slow death in progress.
2. Black Beach, Equatorial Guinea
Black Beach in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea is the world’s cruelest jail and Africa’s notorious jail. Black Beach is reputed for its brutalized nature and constant tortures of the inmates. There is no proper medical supervision, no human rights, no regular family visits, no access to lawyers and totally cut off from the outside world, the jail is prone to malaria and yellow fever endemics. There is no possibility of escaping those barbed wires and heavily guarded soldiers who know nothing other than torturing the inmates. The prisoners are starved to death without food on this island. This prison is also called as “True Hell on Earth” for its brutal treatments.
1. Gitarama Central Prison, Rwanda
Gitarama Central Prison is the worst prison and also the most horrifying prison in the world. This prison is highly overcrowded, where four inmates are left to live, eat, and die in a room of half a square yard of space for each. This prison has a capacity of only 400 prisoners, but 7000 people were squeezed in cattle like condition in the 1990s. There have been one in eight deaths every three-quarters and there are reports of people eating each other’s flesh out of horrid desperation. The cramped conditions of the prisoners have left few of the inmates with no choice but to stand day and night in all-weather conditions and chocking cooking smokes leaving their legs rotten. In short, the prison has another name “Hell on Earth”. The name definitely is true in itself.
